Mangaluru, August 17, 2024: Agnes Towards Community (ATC), a dedicated student-led initiative at St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, took a significant step towards sustainability and community welfare by organizing a plantation drive at Government Higher Primary School, Munnur.

The enthusiastic students participated in the activity, planting a variety of herbal and vegetable plants such as spinach seeds, vitamin soppy, Malabar spinach, Kaadu Basale, gherkins, banana plant, sweet potato, and lady’s finger seeds. The primary objective of this initiative was to promote sustainable gardening practices while fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and community engagement among students.

A Step Towards Sustainability and Nutrition: One of the most impactful aspects of this initiative is that the vegetables grown in the garden will be used for the midday meals of the Munnur school children. This ensures that students have access to fresh, nutritious, and homegrown produce, reinforcing the importance of self-sufficiency and healthy eating habits.

Guidance and Continuous Effort: The event was successfully carried out under the guidance and support of Sr. Evet, Dr. Shailaja, and Mr Ashwath, whose expertise and encouragement played a vital role in its execution.

To ensure the sustainability of the garden, students have committed to taking turns every Saturday to maintain it by watering the plants, adding manure, and keeping the garden clean. This ongoing effort not only nurtures the plants but also strengthens the values of teamwork, responsibility, and care for the environment.

Impact and Future Prospects: The plantation drive by ATC serves as an inspiration for future green initiatives. By integrating sustainability with community service, the students of St. Agnes College continue to uphold their mission of social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

With initiatives like these, ATC is paving the way for a greener, healthier, and more self-sustaining future, proving that small actions can bring about significant change.
