September 17, 2025 — The Department of Political Science and Economics at St. Agnes College Autonomous hosted an engaging and insightful interactive session titled “Bridging Policy and Practice: Women’s Economic Empowerment for Sustainable Development” on September 17, 2025. The program aimed to highlight the significance of women’s empowerment in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5 — Gender Equality.

The event was graced by the presence of Bibi Jan, Convener of Bibi Fathima Self Help Group (SHG), who served as the chief guest. Her speech was both emotional and motivational, inspiring students and attendees alike. Bibi Jan shared her inspiring journey, emphasizing the importance of women’s empowerment and the need for societal and policy-level support to enable women to reach their full potential.

She candidly discussed the various challenges faced by women in her community, including social restrictions, lack of access to education and healthcare, and economic barriers. She outlined the different stages of women’s development, from initial empowerment through education and skill-building to economic independence and leadership roles. Bibi Jan also highlighted current hindrances to women’s enablement, such as gender biases, unequal opportunities, and cultural norms.

The session fostered lively interaction, with students actively engaging by sharing their opinions, asking questions, and discussing ways to promote gender equality. The program was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Gayathri BK, Head of the Department of Political Science, and Ms. Florine, Assistant Professor of Economics, who emphasized the importance of translating policy into practice for sustainable development.
