Student Induction Programme for I Degree Students 2025-26

St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, conducted its induction program for first-year students from June 23 to June 28, 2025. The program was designed to help students transition smoothly into college life by fostering personal development and introducing them to essential academic and social foundations.

Day 1 – 23/06/2025
St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, warmly welcomed its new batch of BCom and BBA students for the academic year 2025–2026 during the First Year Student Assembly. Held in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, the event marked the beginning of an exciting journey for the incoming students and their families. The event began with a prayer by the College Choir and a welcome dance by Ms Sneha and team, followed by a warm address from Mrs Chethana, Dean of Commerce and Management. The Lighting of the Lamp, led by Principal Sr Dr M. Venissa A.C. and other dignitaries symbolized new beginnings. A special highlight of the day was the inspiring interaction with alumna Ms Rhea Lillia Sequeira, who encouraged students to embrace academics and extracurricular activities alike. Principal Sr Dr M. Venissa A.C. addressed the gathering with warmth and encouragement, while Mrs Shanthi Nazareth, Dean of Administration, explained the college’s core values and discipline. Merit Scholarships were awarded to outstanding students, coordinated by Ms Anusha Noronha. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks and the College Anthem, leaving students inspired and ready for the journey ahead. The First-Year Assembly was a true celebration of new beginnings and the promising future of every Agnesian.

Day 2 – 24/06/2025
St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, hosted a well-organized Induction Program on 24 June 2025 to warmly welcome its first-year BA, BCA and BSc students. Principal Sr Dr M. Venissa A.C. encouraged students to pursue not just academic success but life’s greater lessons, emphasizing values of faith, fellowship, and excellence. Alumna Ms Privy D’Souza inspired the students to embrace growth and opportunity, while Dean of Administration Mrs Shanthi M. Nazareth highlighted the college’s prestigious recognitions and introduced key facilities like the library. Scholarships were awarded to students scoring above 92% in PU, celebrating their dedication. The programme was anchored by Mrs Geetanjali Prabhu from the Department of English and welcomed by Mrs Gayathri B. K from the Department of Political Science.

BCom: The Department of Commerce conducted an Orientation Programme for first-year BCom students on 24th June 2025. Alumna and Assistant Professor Ms Samruddhi B K encouraged students to engage in extracurriculars and pursue MOOC platforms like NPTEL and Coursera to stay industry-relevant. A presentation introduced faculty and departmental activities, and Mrs Vineetha, Head of the Department, shared academic and disciplinary guidelines. In the afternoon, a peer-led “Session on Soft Skills” was conducted, featuring final-year BCom students as speakers. Ms Anjolie spoke on the importance of building professional relationships and effective networking, while Ms Ivin highlighted key aspects of communication, including verbal and non-verbal cues and overcoming communication barriers. The session was both informative and interactive, with the speakers earning praise for their confidence and clarity.

BBA: The Department of Business Administration conducted an orientation programme to welcome the incoming BBA Batch of 2025. The event introduced students to the department’s vision, academic expectations, and growth opportunities. The Head of the Department then addressed the students, elaborating on the vision of the BBA programme, emphasizing the importance of active participation, and highlighting the diverse opportunities available within the department. A video presentation was screened, offering the students a glimpse into the dynamic academic and co-curricular environment of the department. Following the formal inaugural session, Ms Michelle Kinara Dsouza, an alumna of the Department of Business Administration, addressed the gathering. She shared her enriching BBA journey, emphasizing the importance of leadership, involvement in departmental activities, and making the most of the opportunities offered during the course. Her talk inspired and motivated the students to engage wholeheartedly in both academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Day 3 – 25/06/2025
Session on “Soft Skills” by Mrs Sheryl Preethika, HOD & Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration (MBA)
The focus of the session was on two key areas: Communication and Teamwork. Mrs Sheryl began the session by engaging the participants in an interactive discussion to understand their perceptions and challenges related to communication. She emphasized the importance of listening, clarity, and non-verbal cues in effective communication. Various activities and real-life examples were used to illustrate how communication can impact personal and professional relationships. The second part of the session centered on Teamwork, where she highlighted the significance of collaboration, trust, and shared responsibility. Through group tasks and reflective questions, participants explored how diverse strengths can contribute to a team’s success and how to handle conflicts constructively. The session was highly interactive and practical, leaving the participants with valuable insights and takeaways on developing essential soft skills for both academic and professional growth.

Session on “Autonomy and Exam Regulations” by Mrs Shubarekha, Registrar and Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics
Mrs Shubarekha provided a clear and insightful explanation of the concept of autonomy in higher education, outlining its significance in shaping the academic framework and offering flexibility in curriculum design, evaluation, and assessment processes. She also elaborated on the examination regulations, highlighting key rules, procedures, and the importance of maintaining academic integrity. Her engaging approach addressed many common student queries and concerns, particularly around exam protocols and academic expectations. She emphasized the values of discipline, accountability, and academic responsibility, setting a strong foundation for students to begin their academic journey with clarity and confidence.

Session on “Mentoring” by Dr Hithakshi B, HOD and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology
The session aimed to help students understand the true essence and importance of mentoring in both their academic and personal growth. Dr Hithakshi clearly explained who a mentor is and how the right guidance can lead to meaningful transformation in a student’s life. To illustrate her message, she shared the inspiring story of a broken pot, symbolizing that every individual has unique strengths and potential. She emphasized that mentors play a crucial role in recognizing and nurturing these qualities. Dr Hithakshi also underlined the significance of trust and confidentiality in the mentor-mentee relationship, reassuring students that their concerns would be treated with sensitivity and respect.

Departmental Orientations
As part of the induction program, departmental orientations were conducted to familiarize students with their respective academic disciplines. These sessions introduced students to the faculty members, curriculum structure, and the various academic and co-curricular opportunities available within each department. The primary objective of these orientations was to help students make informed academic choices and to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of their chosen field of study. By providing a clear overview of departmental expectations and support systems, the sessions laid a strong foundation for a successful academic journey at St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru.

BCom: Final year B.Com students took the lead, sharing insights on key workplace skills. Ms Serena discussed practical strategies for managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and overcoming procrastination. She emphasized how mastering time management contributes to academic success and work-life balance. Ms Priyan explored the significance of teamwork in professional settings, characteristics of a good team player, and how collaboration and communication are crucial for group success.

BBA: An inspiring orientation program was held for the BBA students of St. Agnes College, Mangaluru, aimed at fostering leadership, unity, and readiness for the academic year. The highlight of the event was a motivational address by alumna Ms Privy D’Souza, who emphasized that true leadership lies in self-awareness, empathy, and the courage to take initiative. The program featured interactive elements including a dance activity, talent showcase, and an engaging QA session, all designed to help students connect, communicate, and step out of their comfort zones.

Day 4- 26/06/2025
Session on “Mindfulness” by Dr V. Premanand, HOD, Associate Professor & Research Guide, Post Graduate Department of Psychology
Dr Premanand highlighted the importance of mindfulness for mental well-being and personal development, especially in the context of academic life. He encouraged students to reflect on their past experiences and use them as learning opportunities, while remaining grounded in the present. The session also included practical mindfulness techniques, such as calming breathing exercises, aimed at helping students manage stress, improve focus, and cultivate emotional balance. The session was both reflective and empowering, equipping students with simple yet effective tools to enhance their self-awareness and resilience.

Session on “Information on Library and MOOC Courses” by Mr Avil Dsouza, Librarian
Mr Avil provided an insightful overview of the library’s objectives, services, and resources. He explained the availability and access procedures for the extensive collection of books, journals, newspapers, magazines, and reference materials, along with borrowing rules, loan durations, and the book renewal process. The session also introduced students to the library’s digital services, including computer facilities, e-resources, and the use of the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). In addition, he guided students through MOOC platforms such as SWAYAM and NPTEL, encouraging them to enroll in free online courses for academic and skill enhancement. A live demonstration of the college library portal added a hands-on element to the session, making it both practical and engaging. The orientation was well-received, and students appreciated the clear guidance and motivation to actively use library and online learning resources throughout their academic journey.

Session on “POSH Act” by Dr Devi Prabha Alva, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce
A session on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act was conducted, to raise awareness about creating a safe and respectful environment for women.The session opened with a thought-provoking short film titled “Zaroorat”, depicting real-life instances of workplace harassment and their emotional impact. This powerful introduction set the stage for an interactive discussion. She encouraged students to reflect on the film, share their insights, and engage in a meaningful conversation about harassment and the need for supportive systems. She further explained the objectives and scope of the POSH Act, emphasizing that it applies to all workplaces, including educational institutions. She outlined the various forms of harassment covered under the Act and detailed the structure and function of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). By sharing real-life cases and legal perspectives, she helped students understand both the social and legal significance of the Act. The session concluded with a powerful message: “Speak up, stand strong, and support each other.” The session left a strong impression, calling for continued vigilance and collective responsibility in fostering safe, inclusive spaces.

“Motivational Talk” by Prof. Gerard Dsouza, Professor, Department of Business Administration (MBA)
Prof. Gerard Dsouza delivered a heartfelt talk emphasizing the importance of optimism, practical wisdom, and integrity over mere academic performance.He shared a memorable and thought-provoking formula for success:

● Z – Keep your mouth shut

He encouraged students to reflect daily, stay informed through reading, and uphold values such as honesty and kindness. Quoting Ratan Tata as a model of humble and effective leadership, he urged students to “bloom like a rose among thorns”—nurturing their unique strengths while rising above challenges. The session deeply resonated with the audience, leaving students motivated to lead purposeful lives grounded in positivity and strong moral values.

Session on “Zumba and Aerobics Dance” by Dr Tangarani, Physical Education Directress
A vibrant and energetic Zumba and Aerobics dance session was conducted to promote physical wellness and create a welcoming environment for the newly admitted students. The Aerobics dance segment was conducted by Dr Tangarani and Ms Shamya, a III BCom student, while the Zumba session was led by Ms Manvitha and Ms Sneha, III BSc students, well known for their passion for dance and fitness. The session began with a warm-up, followed by high-energy zumba and aerobics dance routines set to lively music. The fun and inclusive nature of the session encouraged even first-time participants to join in with enthusiasm. The uplifting atmosphere allowed students to relax, bond, and enjoy themselves in a stress-free setting. The session not only boosted physical energy but also fostered a sense of community and positivity, helping first-year student’s kick-start their college journey on a joyful note.

Day 5 – 27/06/2025
Session on “Gender Equity” by Dr Kavyashree K B, Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Psychology
Dr Kavyashree addressed a range of critical issues including gender-based violence, inequality, economic and leadership disparities, and the importance of Sustainable Development Goals. She also clarified the distinction between sex and gender, emphasizing that gender is a social construct influenced by societal norms. Her session highlighted the need for inclusive language, mindset change, and structural equity, stressing that true gender equity lies in ensuring fair and just opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender. The talk was both empowering and thought-provoking, inspiring students to reflect on their own beliefs and take active roles in promoting equality.

Session on “College Rules and Regulations” by Mrs Shanthi M Nazareth, Dean Administration and Assistant Professor, Department of Secretarial Practice
Mrs Shanthi provided a comprehensive overview of the college’s rules and regulations, covering key areas such as academic policies, code of conduct, attendance requirements, and disciplinary procedures. The session aimed to provide students with a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the standards expected of them as members of the college community. It emphasized the importance of discipline, accountability, and respect in fostering a conducive learning environment. The session was effective in orienting students to college expectations, laying a strong foundation for a responsible and successful academic journey.

Session on “Peer Pressure” by Mrs Ashwini K A, Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology
Using a compelling story and engaging multimedia presentations, Mrs Ashwini illustrated the effects of peer pressure on decision-making, behavior, and self-esteem. She emphasized the importance of resisting negative influences, building self-confidence, and staying true to one’s values. The session also included practical strategies for managing peer pressure, such as assertive communication, choosing supportive peer groups, and developing personal boundaries. Students were encouraged to share their own experiences, leading to a meaningful and relatable discussion. The session was informative, reflective, and empowering, helping students understand that with the right mindset and support, peer pressure can be managed positively and constructively.

Session on “Extra-Curricular Activities” by Mrs Anitha S, HOD & Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration
Mrs Anitha, ECA coordinator, provided an overview of the various extracurricular programmes offered at the college, emphasizing their role in promoting holistic student development beyond academics. She introduced the teachers in charge of different activities, who shared brief insights into their respective clubs and initiatives. The session highlighted how participation in ECAs fosters leadership, creativity, teamwork, and time management skills, while also encouraging students to pursue their interests and talents.
