The Department of History under the guidance of Dr Meera, Associate Professor and HOD of History and Ms Tiffany Barrett organised a session on ‘Echoes through Carbon – Dating the footprints of History’ on 6 August 2025. Dr Ita M. D’souza, Associate Professor and HOD of Chemistry, St Agnes College (Autonomous) was the resource person for the session. Jenni of II B.A was the emcee of the session. Tharamathi of II B.A introduced and welcomed the resource person and the gathering. A total of 60 students from III, II and I B.A attended the session.

Dr Ita M. D’souza delivered an engaging and informative lecture that connected the field of chemistry with history. The session began with a brief introduction to the concept of radiocarbon dating, a method used to determine the age of organic materials by measuring the amount of carbon-14 isotope present. Dr Ita M. D’souza explained the principles of Carbon-Dating and its critical role in uncovering historical and archaeological truths. She also addressed the limitations and challenges of carbon dating and highlighted the technological advances in the respective field. Thus the session provided valuable insights into how science aids historical discovery and offered students a deeper appreciation for interdisciplinary research.

The session was interactive, with students actively participating during the Q&A segment. Dr Ita M. D’souza provided thoughtful and well-articulated answers, encouraging further inquiry and critical thinking among the students. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sampoorna of II B.A. As a gesture of gratitude, Dr Meera presented a token of appreciation to Dr Ita M. D’souza for sharing her expertise through an insightful session.
