The PG Department of Business Administration organized an insightful guest talk for MBA students on December 4, 2025, focusing on procurement practices in both the manufacturing and government sectors. The session aimed to provide students with a clear understanding of how procurement systems operate across various domains and how strategic purchasing supports organisational efficiency.

The programme began with an introduction by Dr. Mallika Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of MBA, who welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource speaker, Mr. Vinayaraj C G, Assistant Materials Manager at the New Mangalore Port Authority. With extensive experience in materials management and government purchasing systems, he provided valuable practical insights.

Mr. Vinayaraj explained the structure of procurement in the manufacturing industry, beginning with the identification of new product requirements. He demonstrated how manufacturing organisations analyse material needs, forecast demand, and coordinate with departments for smooth production. A short illustrative video was shown, which helped students understand the workflow.

He further elaborated on government procurement systems, highlighting the procedures followed in public organisations such as the New Mangalore Port Authority. He discussed e-procurement, tendering processes, transparency requirements, and the importance of compliance with government rules and financial guidelines. Students gained insights into how government purchasing differs from private-sector procurement, especially in terms of documentation, approval hierarchy, and audit procedures.

The session provided a clear comparison between manufacturing and government procurement, helping students relate theoretical concepts to real-life practices. The talk was highly informative and enriched students’ understanding of procurement strategies, decision-making systems, and the importance of ethical and efficient purchasing.
