The Department of Arts and Humanities organized an interactive session on ‘Kanara Catholics: A Legacy of Faith and Culture’ on 8 January 2026, in A4, Avila Block. The resource person was Dr Kranti Kiran Farias, a renowned Historian, Social Activist, and President of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Mumbai. Dr Kranti delivered an insightful session on several historical and social themes with special reference to the people of Goa and South Canara. She critically examined the impact of caste system and emphasized how caste-based discrimination has caused social inequality, injustice, and division.

The resource person also highlighted the challenges faced by the people during the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa leading to the suppression of indigenous traditions and destruction of local institutions. She elaborated on the idea of Goa being the mother country of Konkani-speaking Mangaloreans by tracing the historical, cultural, and emotional ties between Goa and the Mangalorean community.

The session was concluded with a discussion on the cultural heritage of Christians, especially in South Canara and Goa. The resource person spoke about unique festivals, customs and traditions that form an important part of the region’s cultural identity. The need to preserve and respect this heritage for future generations was emphasized.

Dr R Nagesh, the Dean of Arts and Humanities graced the occasion. The programme was coordinated by Dr Meera, Associate Professor, HOD of History. The progamme was compared by Ms Sampoorna of II B.A. Ms Thanmayee K Bhatt, the Student Vice President of Arts welcomed the gathering. The Vote of thanks was proposed by J.V. Jaffrin of II B.A. The faculty and students of Arts and Humanities and Konkani Sangh participated in the programme. The session was highly informative and enriching. It enhanced the audience’s awareness of history, social issues, and cultural diversity, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
