Mr Shameem Varikkodan, Consultant Psycho-oncologist & Head Psycho-oncology Services at Cytecare Cancer Hospital, Bangalore, addressed the students of Msc. Psychology and Msc. Clinical Psychology about the scope and future of Clinical-Psycho-Oncology in India.
The speaker spoke about Emotional support, building Coping skills and resilience: by developing effective coping skills to manage the psychological impact of cancer. They may teach relaxation techniques, stress management strategies, and provide guidance on maintaining a positive outlook.
Also the importance of Psychological assessment: Psychologists conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the psychological well-being of cancer patients. This assessment may involve interviews, psychological tests, and questionnaires to understand the patient’s mental health status and identify specific areas of concern. Along with this Psychologists offer psychotherapy or counselling services tailored to the unique needs of cancer patients. They may utilize various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), supportive therapy, or family therapy, to address psychological issues and enhance emotional well-being.
The speaker further explained about role of Psychologists to navigate the challenges of cancer diagnosis and treatment to their family members. They assist in improving doctor-patient communication, enhancing understanding of the treatment process, and aiding in informed decision-making.
Mr Shameem Varikkodan also explained the syllabus and course curriculum of MPhil in Psycho oncology and places in India and abroad to pursue higher studies in the field.
