Eight students from the Department of Commerce, who were trained under the ‘Train the Trainer’ initiative, took the lead in conducting a soft skills training program for students in various colleges. The colleges visited included St. Mary’s Margil in Mangalore, Rotary College and Holy Rosary College in Moodbidri, and St. Cecily’s Composite PU College in Udupi. The purpose of the program was to help fellow students develop essential soft skills that are important for both academic and professional success. This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world expectations by focusing on practical skill development.

The training program, titled “Empower to Excel: Soft Skills for Career Success,” was designed to be interactive and engaging. The sessions began with icebreaker activities to create a friendly and open atmosphere. The first segment focused on communication skills, covering both verbal and non-verbal communication, listening skills, and the basics of professional etiquette. Through roleplays and group discussions, participants learned how to express themselves clearly and respectfully in a professional setting.

The next session focused on teamwork and collaboration, helping students understand how to work effectively in groups. Activities and games were used to highlight the importance of cooperation, patience, and shared responsibilities. This was followed by a session on emotional intelligence, where students explored how to understand and manage emotions, and how to respond thoughtfully in different situations.

Another important part of the training was preparing students for interviews and workplace interactions. The trainers shared tips on how to present oneself confidently, respond to questions appropriately, and maintain proper etiquette during interviews. Practical activities such as mock interviews helped students overcome nervousness and gain confidence.

The program also touched on the importance of leadership, initiative, and a positive attitude in professional settings. Students were encouraged to believe in their potential and strive for continuous self-improvement. Throughout the training, participants were encouraged to ask questions, share experiences, and engage in discussions.

Overall, the outreach program was a great success. It created a supportive environment for learning, encouraged skill-building, and promoted a culture of peer-to-peer empowerment. The Department of Commerce can take pride in this initiative, as it clearly demonstrated the potential of students to lead, teach, and inspire others in their academic community.
