The Department of PG Psychology, St. Agnes Post Graduate Studies and Research Centre, organized a Capacity Building Program titled “Thriving as We Care” on 1st August 2025. This program was conducted to equip budding psychologists with strategies to thrive amidst the challenges of the mental health profession, especially focusing on personal well-being, professional competence, and evidence-based therapeutic practices.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Johnson Alex, Ph.D., M.Phil (Clinical Psychology), FAIMER – a distinguished clinician, academician, and currently the Associate Professor and Head of the School of Behavioural Sciences, Kannur University, Kerala. The session addressed pressing issues faced by psychology trainees and early-career professionals. Dr. Alex provided an in-depth understanding of the real-world challenges and practical strategies to thrive as future mental health professionals.

Dr. Johnson Alex highlighted key issues faced by aspiring psychologists, including uncertainty, emotional strain, and professional burnout. He pointed out that 1 in 5 psychologists leave the profession, and there is a 30% shortage in the mental health workforce. Special attention was drawn to high-risk groups who need prioritized and focused psychological care. The session stressed the importance of using reliable, updated assessment tools with valid norms and discussed challenges in handling legal cases, the ethical use of diagnostic tools, and the need for accuracy in assessments.

He emphasized using evidence-based therapies such as CBT, MBCT, and ACT, highlighting their effectiveness in building resilience and improving client outcomes in clinical settings, also pointed self-care as an essential part of being a psychologist. He introduced the ABC model—Awareness, Balance, and Connections—to prevent compassion fatigue. Participants reflected on their confidence in using strategies like exercise, mindfulness, peer support, and setting boundaries to maintain personal well-being.

The session concluded by encouraging students to enhance professional competence, build strong therapeutic relationships, and maintain work-life balance—key components for long-term success in the mental health field. The program was a powerful blend of insight, inspiration, and introspection. Participants appreciated the discussion on the emotional and ethical challenges in clinical practice, along with practical tools to navigate the same. The focus on resilience-building, evidence-based practices, and ethical diagnostics was particularly impactful.

The Capacity Building Program “Thriving as We Care” served as a timely intervention, instilling hope, awareness, and preparedness among aspiring psychologists. The Department of PG Psychology expresses heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Johnson Alex for his engaging and enriching session.
