The day began with all 28 students assembling at college for roll call, during which 10 saplings were distributed for the planting activity. We were joined by Mrs Seementhini Fernandes, and together we traveled by bus, first to Neermarga, and then onward to our destination. We arrived at the school at around 10:15 AM, where we were welcomed warmly by one of the school teachers. The teachers introduced us to the students and shared the purpose of our visit. There were around 30–40 school children, along with 5 staff members in attendance.
The event commenced with a Kannada prayer song sung by five of our student volunteers, followed by an insightful and engaging talk by Dhanyashree, who spoke about the significance and history of Vanamahotsav. To maintain the energy and engagement of the young audience, our student volunteers conducted an action song and an interactive activity, both of which were enthusiastically received by the children and teachers alike. A Kannada group song followed, and the segment concluded with a quiz session centered around the theme of the day. As a gesture of appreciation, chocolates were distributed to both the children and the staff. Around 11:00 AM, the first half of the program concluded with a brief vote of thanks from one of the teachers. Refreshments in the form of warm ragi milk and biscuits were generously provided by the school.
The sapling plantation activity began at 11:30 AM, marking the highlight of the event. Some school children had brought their own saplings to contribute to the cause. Five saplings from our college were planted in the school’s backyard farm area, with enthusiastic participation from our volunteers and school students. The remaining five saplings were planted in front of the school office building. With active help from the school students and staff—digging, watering, and assisting throughout—the plantation drive was carried out joyfully and efficiently. Throughout the event, our student volunteers were actively engaged with the children—playing, talking, and creating bonds that made saying goodbye at 12:15 PM quite difficult.
This Vanamahotsav celebration was a meaningful and unforgettable experience for each of us. It served as a reminder of our role in nurturing nature and building community connections. We are immensely grateful for this opportunity, and it will remain a cherished memory in our academic journey.
