A three-hour workshop on Writing Technical Instructions, Editing Technical Instructions, Resume Writing and Interviews was conducted on the 4th of March 2020 at St Agnes Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research, it was organized by the Department of English and was attended by the second-year students as part of their paper on English for Specific Purposes.

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by student Gopika Nair who introduced the resource person Ms. Sandya Karnad Deviah, a communications professional with over 28 years of work experience in technical communication, journalism, editing, management, and leadership. She has 23 years of experience in IT – specifically in the technical communication industry, leading and managing technical communication teams in global companies (MNCs such as Cisco, ANZIT, and CitiCorp). She also has worked as News Reporter and Columnist for over 5 years with prominent national English dailies – like the Indian Express, Times of India and Mid-Day Publications. 

Ms. Deviah began the workshop by establishing an interactive rapport with the students and proceeded to conduct the workshop with an introduction into technical writing, the portfolio of the technical communicator and their area of expertise.

She further discussed the language guidelines and the various steps involved in writing clearly and concisely as technical writers. There was a practical session where each student had to write a Topic, the basic unit of technical instruction.

This was followed by a short break after which the workshop continued on Resume writing and how to make the best of an Interview.

Ms. Deviah who has served in interview panels gave the students pointers on how to best answer interviews confidently and how to write a resume that stands out. Using a cover letter written by one of the students the whole class worked out the dos and don’ts of writing a cover letter.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Gopika and handing over a memento by the class representative, Fathimath Jazeela. The entire programme was coordinated with the support of the Principal, Sr Dr. Jeswina AC the PG Coordinator, Sr Dr. Venora AC and staff members of the PG Department of English.
